The essence of motorsport

Why the 964 RS holds a special position

The Porsche 964 Carrera RS is not simply another variant of the 964 but the uncompromising essence of motorsport. Built in a strictly limited run, it stands in the direct tradition of the legendary RS models and embodies a philosophy that to this day forms the heart of the most exclusive Porsches: maximum lightweight construction, a purist specification and engineering tuned for ultimate driving dynamics.

Compared with the standard Carrera models, the RS differs in almost every relevant respect. It is aimed at buyers who seek the unadulterated, direct driving experience and appreciate the value of a true collector's car. This buyer's guide sets out the specific characteristics, the critical points in verifying authenticity and the costs that come with it: magnesium wheel expertise, the aluminium bonnet check, matching numbers, and knowledge of the N/GT and Clubsport cars.

Three expressions of one philosophy: Lightweight, Touring and N/GT.

Basic / Lightweight

The purist

  • The most common and purest form
  • Thin glass, an aluminium bonnet, magnesium wheels
  • No sound insulation and no rear seats

Touring

The rare one

  • Technically an RS
  • Comfort features (seats, electric windows) from the Carrera 2
  • Built in extremely small numbers

N/GT / Clubsport

The race car

  • A welded roll cage, a fire extinguisher, Nomex seats
  • Ready to compete
  • The most expensive model today

1. Body and exterior: lightweight construction with pitfalls +

The body is a masterpiece of weight reduction. An aluminium front lid, thin glass (sides and rear) and reduced underbody protection save as much as 150 kg.

Critical points to check:

  • Originality: is the aluminium bonnet original? Check the stickers and the stampings. A dent in the aluminium bonnet is extremely expensive to put right
  • Magnesium wheels: the original magnesium Cup wheels are prone to cracks and corrosion. A used set costs €5,000 - €10,000 and more
  • Corrosion: window frames, battery box, sills. More vulnerable than the standard cars because of the reduced protection
  • Colours: original colours such as Rubystone Red, Maritime Blue or Speed Yellow command clear premiums
A clean accident record: on an RS this is essential. Check the spot welds in the luggage compartment and under the carpets.
2. Engine and drivetrain: 260 PS and a single-mass flywheel +

The M64/03 engine produces 260 PS. It uses hand-selected components and a light single-mass flywheel for a sharp throttle response. The gearbox (G50/10) has steel synchromesh rings and shorter ratios.

Weak points:

  • Oil leaks: the timing case, crankshaft seals, oil lines. Resealing can cost as much as €8,000
  • Distributor belt: a break causes the second ignition circuit to fail. Replace every 80,000-120,000 km (around €500)
  • Gearbox: a crunch on the shift points to worn synchromesh rings. Overhaul: €5,000 - €10,000 and more
  • Clutch: wears faster because of the single-mass flywheel and hard driving (cost: €2,000 - €3,500)
3. Suspension and brakes: uniball joints and Turbo brakes +

Consistently laid out for the racetrack: 40 mm lower, hard springs, uniball top mounts (instead of rubber) for precision.

  • Uniball joints: they wear and cause noise
  • Dampers: the RS-specific dampers are expensive. An overhaul costs €3,000 - €7,000
  • Brakes: from the 964 Turbo at the front, from the Carrera Cup at the rear. Excellent stopping power. Wear parts (discs/pads) cost €1,500 - €3,000
  • Steering: often without power assistance. Heavy at a standstill, extremely direct on the move
4. Interior and authenticity: the key to the value +

Interior: Recaro bucket seats (worth €4,000 - €8,000 a pair), door pull straps, thin carpet. No insulation. No airbags.

Authenticity check (matching numbers): the most important factor in the value. The engine and gearbox numbers must agree with the delivery records.

  • Wrong numbers reduce the value enormously
  • Check for conversions (a standard C2 made to look like an RS). A genuine RS has specific VIN ranges
  • Ask for a Porsche Classic certificate

Expert advice

The 964 RS is a statement and a store of value. But the market is small and the danger of a car that only looks the part is real.
