What to look out for when buying

The absolute high point of the 997 generation

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS of the 997.2 series (built in 2010 and 2011) marked the absolute high point of the 997 generation and was the most powerful production 911 in history up to that point. Strictly limited to 500 numbered cars, it is today one of the most sought-after collector cars in the world.

Against the trend towards the direct-injection engine in the 997.2 Turbo, the RS stayed with the legendary 3.6-litre Mezger turbo engine, here in its ultimate form with a brutal 620 PS. The combination of radical lightweight construction (a carbon bonnet, plastic windows), rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox makes it a purist supercar for real experts, and a blue-chip investment.

Technical excellence at the limit

Why this 911 plays in a league of its own

Drivetrain & performance

620 PS · 700 Nm

  • Engine: the M97.70 is the final evolution of the GT1 block. With VTG turbochargers running up to 1.6 bar of boost and new intercoolers, it delivers power in abundance
  • Gearbox: a strengthened six-speed manual sends the power to the rear wheels alone

Lightweight construction & carbon

Minus 70 kg (against the GT2)

  • A battle of materials: a bonnet in exposed carbon, plastic wing extensions, and a rear window and rear side windows in polycarbonate
  • A lithium-ion starter battery was available as an option, saving a further 10 kg

Weak points: engineering at the limit

On a car in this price class, technical perfection is essential.

1. The coolant pipe connections: absolutely essential +

The ultimate version of the Mezger engine produces enormous heat. The known problem of the bonded coolant pipe connections is more critical here than on any other model.

  • The risk: the extreme temperature cycles make the bonding fail. The connections work loose and coolant escapes all at once
  • The consequence: an acute risk of an accident (coolant on the rear tyres) and the risk of catastrophic engine damage through overheating
Protecting your investment: on this model, preventive pinning or welding of the connections is essential. Cost: €2,500 to €5,000 (the engine has to come out). Evidence that it has been done raises the value considerably.
2. VTG turbochargers & Mezger maintenance +

The block is durable, but what surrounds it is asked for a great deal.

  • VTG turbochargers: these special turbochargers run at higher pressure. The adjusting mechanism (the linkage) can seize or wear. Replacement is extremely expensive (special parts for the RS)
  • Maintenance: meticulous, frequent and expert maintenance by specialists is vital. With sporting use the oil change intervals should be halved
3. Gearbox, single-mass flywheel & clutch +
  • Clutch: with 700 Nm of torque and rear-wheel drive, the clutch is extremely stressed. It counts as a wear item. Replacement is a big job (cost roughly €2,500 to €4,500)
  • Flywheel: the GT2 RS uses a single-mass flywheel as standard. The distinct rattle at idle is inherent in the design and not a fault (the "bag of nuts and bolts" noise). It lets the engine climb through the revs extremely quickly
4. Suspension, carbon & PCCB +

The suspension is a development of the GT3 RS and GT2 set-up. Uniball bearings are standard in many places.

  • Wear: very heavy wear on the uniball bearings, the bushes and the PASM dampers when the car is used as it was built to be used
  • PCCB: ceramic brakes are standard. Replacement discs cost over €5,000 per axle. Check them for chipping at the edges and for their wear indicators
  • Carbon parts: the bonnet, the wing extensions and the air intakes are carbon. Damage is extremely expensive to put right

The deciding factor: the limit of 500 cars makes the GT2 RS one of the most value-stable assets on the market. Freedom from accident damage and original paint are essential.

The strategic conclusion from 911Finder

The 997.2 GT2 RS is one of the most extreme and most sought-after 911s of all time. A brutal driver's car and a blue-chip investment. Buying recommendation: Buy only cars with an unbroken history and with the preventive work (the coolant) demonstrably carried out. With an investment above €450,000 there is no alternative to due diligence by experts.
