What to look out for when buying

One of the last real supercars for purists

The Porsche 911 GT2 of the 997.1 series (introduced in 2007) is regarded as one of the last real supercars for purists. It is the extreme, rear-driven evolution of the 997.1 Turbo, combining that car's legendary 3.6-litre Mezger block with radical lightweight construction and output raised to 530 PS.

It does without the heavy four-wheel drive system, uses a six-speed manual gearbox exclusively, and was the first Porsche with a titanium exhaust system and PCCB ceramic brakes as standard. Often called the "widowmaker", it asks for an experienced hand. For collectors it is one of the most sought-after modern models, provided the engineering (the coolant pipe connections above all) has been dealt with.

What sets the GT2 apart from the Turbo

Engine & drivetrain

530 PS · 680 Nm

  • The engine is based on the Turbo's Mezger block, but with decisive changes: a special expansion intake system (cooling the mixture for more power), higher boost pressure (1.4 bar) and VTG turbochargers
  • The gearbox: a strengthened six-speed manual with steel synchroniser rings in gears 1 to 3. No PDK available.

Lightweight construction & aerodynamics

Minus 145 kg (against the Turbo)

  • The diet: dropping four-wheel drive, PCCB ceramic brakes as standard and Porsche's first standard titanium rear silencer save a great deal of weight
  • Aerodynamics: the fixed rear wing has functional ram-air inlets that force air directly into the intake tract

Weak points: the Mezger and the high technology

The drivetrain is robust, but everything around it is vulnerable and expensive.

1. The coolant pipe connections: the main risk +

The classic Mezger problem: the coolant pipe connections on the engine block are bonded in place. On a car under the thermal load of a GT2, the bonding failing is a question of time.

  • The danger: the connections slip out and the coolant drains away all at once
  • The remedy: preventive pinning or welding of the connections
Since the engine has to come out, reckon with €2,500 to €5,000. A GT2 without this fix is a risk.
2. VTG turbochargers & the robustness of the engine +

The engine itself (crank assembly, pistons) is extremely durable (no IMS bearing, no bore scoring). The problems lie in what surrounds it.

  • VTG turbochargers: the variable turbine geometry is controlled through linkages. These can seize or become stiff (particularly on low-mileage collector cars)
  • The consequence: a loss of power, limp home mode. Repair is often not possible; replacement costs €2,000 to €5,000 per turbocharger
  • Maintenance: the cooling system (the radiators at the front) and regular oil changes are vital
3. Clutch hydraulics & gearbox +

The gearbox stands up to the power, but what surrounds it suffers.

  • Clutch: heavily stressed by the huge torque (680 Nm). Wear is normal
  • Hydraulics: the GT2 uses hydraulic clutch assistance. The accumulator and the slave cylinder often start to leak (the pedal feels hard before starting)
  • Cost: a clutch replacement including the hydraulic components often comes to €2,000 to €4,000
4. PCCB ceramic brakes & suspension +
  • PCCB: standard on the GT2. The brakes are fantastic, but replacement discs cost over €5,000 each (over €20,000 for the whole car). Check the discs for mechanical damage (chipped edges) and their wear indicators
  • PASM: the dampers wear with track use
  • Bearings: suspension bushes and wheel bearings suffer under the high forces of rear-wheel drive

Running costs & investment

A GT2 is a supercar. The running costs reflect that.

Price ranges

Rare, sought after and extremely stable in value.

CategoryPrice range
Entry level (high mileage)from €170,000
Market level (well cared for)€180,000 - €240,000
Collector car (top history)€250,000 and more

The deciding factor: cars with the coolant pipe connections already dealt with, and with no over-revs (the FAP log), sit at the upper end of the price range.

The strategic conclusion from 911Finder

The 997.1 GT2 is a brutal, purist supercar with the robust Mezger engine. The known weak points (the pipe connections, the VTG turbochargers) call for a budget. Investment: a collector car for experienced drivers, with excellent stability of value. Buying one calls for real expertise, particularly on the condition of the PCCB brakes and on over-revs.
