997 Carrera (3.6L)
325 PS · M96.05
- 3.6-litre flat six, rear-wheel drive (C2) or all-wheel drive (C4)
- Among experts it counts as the more robust engine compared with the S, because the cylinder walls are thicker (a lower risk of bore scoring)

The return of the icon · 2004-2008Beauty with technical demands: prices, weak points, technical checks and checklist. So you can assess the engineering and the history with confidence and avoid buying the wrong car.
The first generation of the Porsche 911 of the 997 series (997.1) marked a return to classic design elements. With round headlights and pronounced hips, Porsche corrected the controversial looks of its 996 predecessor.
Although the 997.1 counts as a clear improvement and lifted the interior to a new level of quality, it inherited the engine architecture (M96/M97) of its predecessor. That means specific risks such as the intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) and, above all, bore scoring on the S model are real. This buyer's guide is your shield against a bad investment.

The heart of the car is powerful, but not free of faults. Here is the unvarnished truth.
A serious problem that affects above all the 3.8-litre engines (M97) in the Carrera S but can also occur on the 3.6-litre versions. Scoring forms on the cylinder walls, usually on bank 2 (cylinders 4-6).
The causes:
Symptoms and diagnosis:
The bearing of the intermediate shaft (IMS) is a perennial topic. There are two versions in the 997.1:
Crankshaft seal: leaks between the engine and the transmission. As long as it is only weeping, this is often not critical. Replacement costs around €1,000 - €1,500 (the transmission has to come out).
Cooling system:
250 to 600 pages of expert knowledge (depending on the edition) on the 997.1 Carrera and Carrera S: detailed weak points, engine codes, specification details, inspection checklists, production figures, value-enhancing options and price forecasts.
The 997 is not a cheap car to run. Here are the facts.
| Work / repair | Approx. cost (€) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine rebuild (bore scoring) | 15,000 - 25,000 | Steel liners / Nikasil |
| IMS bearing (preventive, early cars only) | 1,500 - 3,000 | Doing the clutch at the same time is recommended |
| Crankshaft seal | 1,000 - 1,500 | The transmission has to come out |
| Water pump + thermostat | 800 - 1,200 | Worth doing as a precaution |
| Air-conditioning condensers (both) | 1,000 - 1,500 | Removal of the bumper included |
| PASM damper (pair) | 1,500 - 2,000 | Parts + fitting |
| Clutch, complete | 1,800 - 2,500 | Wear item |
| Major service | 1,200 - 1,800 | Every 60,000 km / 4 years |
Prices have risen, but beware of "cheap" cars that have not been rebuilt.
| Model / condition | Price range |
|---|---|
| Carrera (3.6) more than 100,000 km | from €45,000 |
| Carrera (3.6), well kept | €50,000 - €65,000 |
| Carrera S (3.8), well kept | €55,000 - €75,000 |
| Carrera 4S / special models | €65,000 - €85,000 and more |
The 997.1 is beautiful, but technically demanding. The 3.6-litre engine is statistically less prone to bore scoring than the 3.8 S. Essential: NEVER buy a 997.1 without a borescope inspection of the cylinder bores. Undetected bore scoring is a write-off in economic terms.
