Buyer's guide: the spearhead

The benchmark

The 992 Turbo S counts as the perfect sports car. With up to 650 PS, all-wheel drive and active aerodynamics, it defines the peak of performance below the GT models.

It brings together the performance of a hypercar (0-100 km/h in 2.7 s) with the comfort of a grand tourer. But that technical complexity demands the greatest care when buying used: the follow-on costs of a failure are at supercar level.

High-tech analysis

The technical package in detail

What sets the Turbo S apart from the standard Carrera.

Engine: 3.8L twin-turbo VTG

580 or 650 PS

  • A specific 3,745 cc flat six with VTG turbochargers
  • 580 PS (Turbo) or 650 PS (Turbo S)
  • Status: the engine block is regarded as extremely durable. No systematic failures are known
  • Enormous reserves of power (800 Nm of torque)

Active aero and chassis

PAA · PDCC · rear-axle steering

  • PAA: active front lip (pneumatic) and rear wing
  • PDCC: roll stabilisation (standard on the S) keeps the car flat through corners
  • Rear-axle steering for agility is standard
  • Complex hydraulics/pneumatics increase the servicing risk

PCCB ceramic brakes

Standard on the Turbo S

  • Standard on the Turbo S (optional on the Turbo)
  • Enormous 420 mm discs on the front axle (10-piston calliper)
  • Advantage: no brake dust, extreme performance, lasts indefinitely in road use
  • Risk: extremely expensive if damaged or worn
Risk management

Potential weak points

Mechanicals and systems +
  • PAA (active aero): the pneumatic front lip is vulnerable to grounding and to leaks. Repairs are involved
  • PDCC hydraulics: leaks can occur in the roll stabilisation system
  • Cooling system: the large front air intakes collect stones and leaves. A hazard for the radiators
  • HPFP: the high-pressure fuel pump can fail in isolated cases (€1,500 - €3,000)
Electronics and body +
  • PCM 5.0/6.0: known software bugs, black screens or CarPlay dropouts. Check for the current software version.
  • Door handles: the electric deploying mechanism can stick
  • Driver assistance systems: the sensors in the front apron are exposed to stone chips and expensive to calibrate
Expert tip on the PCCB brakes: check the ceramic discs not only for thickness (wear) but above all for chipping at the edges and for the surface structure. A single stone chip can destroy a disc and cause costs of more than €5,000 each.

The cost of performance

The price level

The Turbo S is extremely stable in value, particularly given its high list prices.

SegmentPrice level
TurboEntry from around €180,000
Turbo SMarket entry from around €210,000 - €220,000
Top examples (low mileage and PTS colours)often still more than €250,000
TrendStable at a very high level

The Turbo is often a niche model, because most buyers go straight for the "S".

Conclusion: The 992 Turbo S is the ultimate all-purpose weapon. It can do everything. But: complex systems (PAA, PDCC, PCCB) mean potential five-figure repair costs with age.

The 911Finder buying recommendation

Invest before you buy: on an investment of more than €200,000, a specialist inspection of the ceramic brakes and the aerodynamics is indispensable.
