The change of paradigm

The Porsche 992.1 GT3 RS (from mid-2022) marks a change of paradigm. Rather than simply chasing more power, the engineers turned to radical aerodynamics. The result is the most extreme naturally aspirated car in Porsche history.

With its 525 PS 4.0-litre engine (MA2.75) and a first-time centre radiator layout (which does away with the front luggage compartment), it reaches downforce figures that exceed even GT3 race cars. Highlights such as the active DRS (Drag Reduction System) in the rear wing and compression and rebound damping adjustable directly from the steering wheel make it a professional race car with a number plate. For investors, the extreme demand and limited availability make it a hard asset.

Weak points: complexity and carbon costs

If something breaks here, the bill runs into five figures.

1. Active aerodynamics (PAA) and DRS +

The system is highly complex. Hydraulic cylinders move the wing, electric motors the flaps at the front.

  • Risk: a failed sensor or actuator leads to fault messages and a loss of performance. Repairing the DRS mechanism runs into thousands
  • Centre radiator: the radiator placed centrally in the nose is exposed to stone chips (which is why there is no luggage compartment). Check the fins through the vents in the bonnet
2. Carbon body and doors +

The 992 RS takes lightweight construction to extremes. Wings, bonnet, roof and, for the first time, the doors are made of CFRP (carbon fibre).

  • The cost trap: damage to a carbon door (from a car park knock or an accident, for example) is extremely expensive. A bare door costs more than €10,000
  • Weissach package: additionally includes carbon anti-roll bars and drop links. The same applies here: if they break, it gets extremely expensive
3. Uniball suspension and tyres +
  • Wear: the suspension runs entirely on spherical (uniball) joints. Wear is high under track use (play, noises)
  • Tyres: the optional Michelin Cup 2 R tyres are extremely soft. On track, a set often lasts no more than a day. Cost per set: more than €2,000
  • Magnesium wheels (Weissach option): save around 8 kg, but cost more than €15,000 per set. Extremely vulnerable to kerb contact
4. Engine and PDK transmission +

The drivetrain is the most robust element of the car.

  • PDK: the 7-speed PDK has extremely short overall gearing (top speed "only" 296 km/h in favour of acceleration). Regarded as durable. Replacement after a failure costs more than €15,000
  • Servicing: meticulous adherence to the intervals is essential
