The eighth generation

The step into the digital age

With the eighth generation (992), Porsche took the step into the digital age from 2019. Immediately recognisable on the outside: the wide "Turbo body" is now standard on every model, a substantial visual gain for the base car too.

Technically, the 992.1 marks a milestone: the further developed 3.0-litre twin-turbo engines (9A2 Evo) use piezo injectors for the first time, for an even more precise fuel flow. The entirely new 8-speed PDK is already designed to accommodate future hybridisation. Inside, the "Advanced Cockpit" with digital instruments dominates. A high-tech sports car whose complexity, however, calls for specific knowledge at the point of purchase.

The evolution of power

Carrera or Carrera S?

The 9A2 Evo engine sets new standards in efficiency and response.

911 Carrera (base)

385 PS · 450 Nm

  • 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six (9A2 Evo) with piezo injectors
  • Smaller turbochargers: extremely immediate throttle response
  • Often the more harmonious choice for open-road use
  • The power can be used more often in everyday driving
  • Do not underestimate the "base" car

911 Carrera S / 4S

450 PS · 530 Nm

  • Larger turbochargers and adapted software
  • Supercar performance: around 3.5 s to 100 km/h
  • Optionally with the 7-speed manual gearbox (unlike the base car)
  • The manual is an important investment criterion

8-speed PDK

A transmission revolution

  • Entirely newly developed
  • Eighth gear cuts motorway revs substantially
  • Space in the transmission housing already provided for an electric motor
  • Future-proofed through hybrid preparation

7-speed manual gearbox

For the S and GTS only

  • The familiar 7-speed gearbox from the 991
  • Paired with the Sport Chrono package
  • Automatic throttle blipping
  • Rare on the used market and often stable in price
Specialist knowledge

Weak points: software, battery and GPF

The 992 is robust, but suffers from "modern" problems.

1. Engine (9A2 Evo), piezo injectors and GPF +

The engines are regarded as very durable. The charge air coolers moved from the wings to a position directly under the rear lid (better efficiency).

  • Petrol particulate filter (GPF): standard in Europe. It noticeably damps the sound. With a lot of short-journey use there is a theoretical risk of blocking (inconspicuous so far)
  • Piezo injectors: they deliver efficiency, but are sensitive to poor fuel quality
  • Water pump: as on the predecessor, a weak point. Leaks (vacuum system) can occur (cost: €600 - €1,200)
  • Engine mounts (PADM): the dynamic mounts still have a tendency to fail (a fault message in the display)
2. Infotainment (PCM) and driver assistance systems +

The 992 is a computer on wheels. The PCM (Porsche Communication Management) had substantial problems at first.

  • Software faults: black screens, dropped connections, Apple CarPlay failures. Always check whether the update to PCM 6.0 (recognisable by colour icons instead of black and white) has been carried out
  • Driver assistance systems: fault messages from InnoDrive or the adaptive cruise control often go back to dirty or decalibrated sensors
3. The lithium battery (LiFePO4) trap +

Many 992s (particularly with rear-axle steering) have a lithium starter battery as standard. It is light, but extremely expensive.

  • The problem: if it is deeply discharged, the battery switches into a protection mode and often cannot be woken again
  • Cost: a new LiFePO4 battery costs around €1,500 to €2,000 at Porsche (plus coding)
A trickle charger is essential if the car stands for any length of time.
4. Door handles, roof and radiators +
  • Electric door handles: they deploy as you approach. In frost or with a weak battery they can stick or fail to deploy
  • Cooling system: the large openings at the front collect stones and leaves. The result: a risk of corrosion on the air-conditioning condensers. Protective grilles (aftermarket) are worth having
  • Accident repair: because of the mix of aluminium in the body, bodywork is considerably more involved and more expensive than on older models

Factor: options such as Sport Chrono, the sports exhaust system (SAGA) and Bose/Burmester are essential for resale. Without the sports exhaust, the 992 is acoustically very reserved.

The strategic conclusion: A technologically brilliant 911 with extremely high everyday quality. The engines are reliable, the electronics are the challenge.

The 911Finder buying recommendation

Pay meticulous attention to the software version (PCM 6.0) and to the condition of the lithium battery. A Carrera S with the manual gearbox is the best long-term investment.
