The ultimate stage of development

The naturally aspirated concept at its limit

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS of the 991.2 series (from 2018) is regarded as the ultimate stage of development of the naturally aspirated concept of the 991 era. It uses the celebrated 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine (MA1.76), raised here to 520 PS through fine-tuning of the valvetrain, revving to a screaming 9,000 rpm.

Visually and technically, the focus was radically on aerodynamics and lightweight construction. NACA ducts in the front lid for brake cooling and a gigantic rear wing deliver downforce at Cup level. With the optional Weissach package (carbon roof, titanium cage, magnesium wheels) it becomes the ultimate track tool and a sought-after collector's car. But in the event of damage, the exotic materials drive costs to astronomical levels.

Technical evolution and Weissach

Details between road and racetrack

RS specifications: the details that make the difference between road and racetrack.

The 520 PS engine

MA1.76 · 9,000 rpm

  • The 4.0L naturally aspirated unit from the GT3, with a solid valvetrain (no hydraulic lifters) and a new intake
  • Regarded as extremely durable and eager to rev
  • Transmission: PDK only (7-speed) with a specific RS calibration and ultra-short shift times

The Weissach package

Optional lightweight construction

  • Exposed carbon roof and carbon anti-roll bars on both axles (!)
  • Titanium roll cage and carbon drop links
  • Highlight: forged magnesium wheels were available on top of this as an option (saving around 11.5 kg of unsprung mass)

Suspension: uniball precision

Unlike the standard GT3, on the 991.2 RS every suspension bearing is designed as a spherical (uniball) joint (no more rubber bushes). This delivers maximum precision, but dramatically increases wear and the level of noise in the cabin.

Specialist knowledge

Weak points: expensive lightweight construction & track wear

The engine lasts. The risk lies in the exotic components.

Weissach risks: magnesium and carbon +

The Weissach package is coveted, but a financial disaster if anything is damaged.

  • Magnesium wheels: extremely light, but brittle. Kerb contact or hard kerbing can cause hairline cracks. A set costs more than €15,000. Checking for run-out and cracks is essential.
  • Carbon parts: the carbon-fibre roof and anti-roll bars are barely repairable after an accident and have to be replaced at great expense
Engine (520 PS) and servicing +

The MA1.76 is a mature design. No systematic faults are known.

  • Maintenance: Under track use (which is what the RS was built for), the service intervals have to be shortened drastically (engine oil, transmission oil, spark plugs)
  • High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP): The fuel pump can fail in rare cases (cost around €1,500 - €3,000)
  • Radiators: the large air intakes collect rubber debris and stones. The radiators corrode or start to leak
Uniball suspension and PCCB +

The uniball suspension transmits every vibration. That leads to increased wear.

  • Components: spherical joints develop play and rattle. Wishbones and track rods are wear parts
  • PASM: the dampers suffer from the hard calibration and from kerbing. Replacement costs €1,000 - €2,000 per axle
  • PCCB: Optional. Ceramic brakes are extremely expensive (more than €5,000 per axle for parts alone). Many track drivers convert to steel. Check whether the original PCCB parts come with the car.
Lift system and aerodynamics +
  • Front axle lift: The hydraulic/pneumatic system often starts to leak. Repair is involved
  • Front spoiler: the lip is extremely exposed and a classic wear part (€200 - €400)
  • NACA ducts: the air intakes on the bonnet serve to cool the brakes. Check the ducting underneath for damage

Price ranges

CategoryPrice range
Market entry (high mileage)from €220,000
Market level (well cared for)€230,000 - €260,000
Weissach / magnesium€260,000 - €300,000+

Factor: the Weissach package is the biggest driver of value. Cars without it are noticeably cheaper, but also harder to sell.

The strategic conclusion from 911Finder

An extreme track car with road registration and a magnificent naturally aspirated engine. The engine is reliable, the peripherals (lightweight construction) extremely expensive. Investment: Buying one calls for expertise and a substantial budget for running it. A thorough inspection of the magnesium wheels and carbon parts by a specialist is indispensable.
