The summit of the 991 series

The most powerful road-legal 911 of its day

The Porsche 991 GT2 RS marks the absolute summit of the 991 series. With 700 PS, pure rear-wheel drive and a Nordschleife time of 6:47.3 minutes, it suspended the laws of physics on its debut.

Technically it is based on the Turbo S, but it was radically transformed: larger turbochargers, innovative water injection to cool the charge air and consistent lightweight construction (magnesium, carbon, titanium) make it the most powerful road-legal 911 of all time (as of its era). With a limited run of around 1,000 cars (plus the replacements for the four cars lost at sea), it is today a sought-after asset in the half-a-million-euro class.

Weak points: robustness and the water tank

The engine lasts, but the racetrack takes its toll.

Engine (700 PS) and water injection +

The engine is based on the robust Turbo S unit, but is substantially reinforced (pistons, connecting rods, larger VTG turbochargers).

  • Water injection: to keep intake air temperatures stable at 700 PS, the system sprays distilled water onto the charge air coolers
  • Maintenance: The 5-litre tank in the luggage compartment has to be topped up regularly with distilled water. Running it dry reduces power (protection mode)
  • Reliability: Very high. Isolated leaking hoses in the water system
Weissach risks: magnesium and carbon +

As on the GT3 RS, the Weissach package is both a blessing and a curse.

  • Magnesium wheels: Extremely light, but delicate. A set costs more than €15,000. Check them meticulously for cracks or kerb damage when viewing the car
  • Carbon parts: Carbon anti-roll bars and drop links are prone to wear under hard track use and expensive to replace
Uniball suspension and wheel bearings +

The suspension runs entirely on uniball (spherical) joints. That delivers precision, but also wear.

  • Wheel bearings/centre lock: under track use, the service schedules prescribe replacement of the centre-lock nuts and wheel bearings at set intervals. A replacement costs around €4,000 - €5,000
  • PCCB: Standard. The ceramic discs last a long time, but are extremely expensive to replace (more than €5,000 per axle for parts alone)
Body, glazing and Manthey +
  • Gorilla Glass: the rear and side windows are made of thin lightweight glass (similar to smartphone glass). They are extremely light, but can crack
  • Manthey Racing (MR): many GT2 RS were upgraded with the MR kit (suspension, aero, water tank). This does not reduce the value but often increases it, because it optimises Nordschleife performance

Market prices & investment

The most powerful 911 is also one of the most expensive.

CategoryPrice range
Market entryfrom €400,000 (very rare)
Market standard (Weissach)€450,000 - €550,000
Collector's car (MR kit/low mileage)€600,000+

Factor: an original Weissach package is essential for value development. Retrofitted MR kits (Manthey) also add value.

The strategic conclusion from 911Finder

The 991.2 GT2 RS is a technical masterpiece and an extreme driving experience. It is the final-boss car of the 991 generation. Investment: Given the limited numbers and the brutal performance, it counts as a safe investment. Look for a clean accident record (carbon structure) and for the servicing of the centre locks.
