Technical check

Technical substance and weak points

Look closely at the specific challenges of the limited editions.

Body: the foundation and the corrosion problem +

The G-Series cars (1974-1989) are prone to corrosion as a rule. On the early cars (1975) this is particularly pronounced, while late cars (Club Sport, the 1989 anniversary model) show fewer problems thanks to improved processes.

Critical inspection points:

  • Sills (inside and out), jacking points and floor panels
  • Wings (headlight bowls) and window frames
  • Speedster in particular: watch for water getting in at the windscreen and check the condition of the costly hood mechanism
  • Club Sport: Check the originality of the lighter doors and the Fuchs wheels
  • Originality: US cars often have the large impact bumpers known as elephant feet; swapping them for European ones reduces the collector value
Engines, gearboxes and drivetrain +

Characteristics by model:

  • 2.7 litres (1975): the magnesium crankcase is a problem (distortion, cracks), as are broken head studs. The Bosch MFI system calls for expert knowledge
  • 3.0 litres (1981): extremely robust, but prone to leaking valve stem seals and to CIS problems (K-Jetronic)
  • 3.2 litres (Speedster, CS, 1989 anniversary model): DME injection (L-Jetronic); regarded as the most reliable air-cooled engine
  • Club Sport particularity: a verifiable EPROM chip and the light flywheel are essential to the value

Gearbox development: While the early cars used the 915 gearbox (notchy once the synchromesh rings wear), the 1989 cars (Speedster, anniversary model) received the superior G50.

Electrics, interior and authenticity +

Charm vs wear:

  • Dashboard: The typical cracks from UV exposure are costly to repair
  • Club Sport: Absolutely spartan. Air conditioning or a radio fitted later destroys the purist collector value
  • The 1989 anniversary model: the Silk Grey leather with its specific patterns is a central factor in the price
  • Electrics: On special models, corroded earth points and brittle wiring looms often cause the instruments to misbehave
Buying checklist: general tips for high-ticket buyers +

Matching numbers and documentation: Always obtain a Porsche certificate of authenticity or the Kardex records. Discrepancies in the engine or gearbox numbers reduce the value enormously.

  • Check for a complete service history and photographs of any restoration
  • Choose a car with a clear history over a visually perfect one with no paperwork
  • On re-imports: check that the car was cleared through customs correctly and that any conversion work was done properly

The strategic conclusion from 911Finder

Special models are excellent stores of value. The narrow-body Speedster and the Club Sport have shown the most dynamic development in recent years. For collectors the rule is: authenticity beats appearance. An unrestored car with a complete history often achieves a higher price than a sterile full restoration.
