The crowning end of the Mezger era

The Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 marks the absolute crowning end of the 997 series and of the era of naturally aspirated Mezger engines. With only around 600 cars built, it is today one of the most sought-after collector cars in the world.

It is not just a car but a technical masterpiece: the 4.0-litre engine uses the crankshaft straight out of the 911 RSR racing car. With 500 PS, a manual gearbox and radical lightweight construction, many regard it as the best 911 of all time. But even legends have weak points, and investors need to know them.

RSR DNA

  • The crankshaft and the titanium connecting rods were taken directly from the 911 GT3 RSR racing car
  • The compression ratio is an extreme 12.6:1

Aerodynamics & lightweight construction

Flics & carbon

  • Aerodynamics: the first production car with flics on the front apron for more downforce. The rear wing is set at a steeper angle (9 degrees)
  • Carbon: the bonnet and the front wings are carbon fibre, as standard

Weak points: the 4.0 risk

Even gods are mortal. These points decide the value.

1. The engine (4.0): coolant pipe connections & throttle body +

The M97/77R is a masterpiece, but it has specific weak points that can have catastrophic consequences.

  • Coolant pipe connections: as on every Mezger engine, the connections are bonded. They can work loose, and the result is a sudden loss of coolant. The remedy: preventive pinning or welding (the engine has to come out, cost €3,000 to €5,000)
  • A problem specific to the 4.0: there have been reports of screws on the throttle body shaft and the camshaft adjusters working loose and finding their way into the combustion chamber, which destroys the engine
  • Service campaigns: check meticulously whether the relevant service campaigns or inspections are documented in the history
2. Centre lock & over-revs +
  • Over-revs (DME): a 4.0 RS is often used as it was built to be used. Checking the FAP (Fahrzeuganalyseprotokoll) for over-revs (ranges 1 to 6) is essential. Entries in ranges 4 to 6 reduce the value or are a deal-breaker
  • Centre lock: the hubs and nuts are wear items. For track use, Porsche specifies strict replacement intervals. A set of new hubs, bearings and bolts costs several thousand euros
3. Suspension, carbon & the titanium exhaust +
  • Titanium exhaust: the titanium rear silencer is prone to cracking (vibration and heat). Replacement is extremely expensive
  • Lift system: the optional front axle lift often fails through faulty pressure switches or leaks
  • Carbon parts: check the front wings and the bonnet for cracks in the clear coat or in the structure. Replacement parts are astronomically expensive and hard to obtain
